Set to Tool's Lateralus, loaded with series spoilers for Fullmetal Alchemist.

You're most like Kaoru!
You're like Kaoru! Many may perceive you as the strong-and-silent type. You hardly talk and you don't really need to: you prefer working alone. You keep to yourself so much that others don't know much about you at first glance. You may be antisocial, but the comrades that you do have can trust you with their lives.

Which Uninhabited Planet Survive character are you most like?

I've been watching Shuffle! for a while now. Originally I downloaded it because of a review (not even a positive one) I read. Teen boy gets told that both the princess of Heaven and the princess of Hell want to marry him and he needs to pick one... it seemed like it might be amusing. Well the first 13 or so are amusing, the princesses are competing with the live-in, the senpai, and even the preteen (who seems to be the smartest one of the lot). There are a ton of panty shots, a fair amount of bare breasts, and some lesbian hints here and there. Nice, mindless fluff.

And then episode 14 came out. The preteen becomes the focus of angst. Then the princesses reveal new layers of WTF. The senpai reveals a sad and angsty past. Then you get to episodes 18-20 and things really hit the fan. I've come to the conclusion that, with the possible exceptions of the pervy male best friend, the school reporter, the preteen (who's not to blame for her problems, at all), and maybe the king of Hell, every single one of them is majorly fucked up.

After those last three episodes I'd wouldn't be surprised if this turns into one of those "everybody dies" anime.

I'm co-maintaining a new community with [livejournal.com profile] toshirodragon and I thought it might be a good idea to let people know. :)

[livejournal.com profile] paintedshoji is an anime and manga focused desktop wallpaper community. Any genre goes, shounen, shoujo, yaoi/shounen-ai, yuri/shoujo-ai, whatever. Fanart based wallpapers are accepted so long as the poster is the artist. Because my co-maintainer and I are coming at this from the yaoi/yuri angle the community is friends locked and adults only.

First, write down the names of 12 characters. Then read and answer the questions. You can't look at the questions (or click on the cut) until you write down the 12 characters you're going to use.

I've been chatting with someone about cosplaying Kaede (from Inuyasha) and came up with this idea for her friend with lots of long dark hair.

Diagram behind the cut )

The basic idea is that for a person with a lot of hair a wig might be a bit of a hassle. Since Kaede (and several other characters I can think of) ties her hair in a very low ponytail there's theoretically room for a snood (a cloth or net sack to hold a person's hair) above the tie.

Now if someone were cosplaying Kikyo and already had long dark hair (long in this case being sufficient to bind into a tail at the appropriate point) this is overkill. If their hair is dark and long enough then all they really need is a (possibly modified) Halo frame (if they don't want to cut fringe) and some wefted hair to match their own hair to add length to the ponytail.

Getting back to the snood-wig, it could also be used by someone with shorter hair if they wanted to have something lighter than a full wig (since even old lady anime characters have huge amounts of hair it seems). They could just add some stuffing to the snood (and possibly a small weight in the bottom to make the hair behave more naturally).

Disclaimer: I have not built a snood-wig so this is all theory based on my knowledge of things like wigs and sewing.

If my server were up I'd put an image here, but for now you just get a link. Scroll down a bit to get to the tachikoma.

Edit to add: Tachikoma Grand Theft Auto mod.

Well I've finally made it through all my posts and tagged them. I'll probably refine the tags a bit (some ramble posts will be changed to tidbit, and tidbit might become life, or life might branch out from tidbit and ramble...) but for now it's done.

I should perhaps also go through and put subjects on everything.... "No subject" is unhelpful when searching for something.

My server is still down and I'm getting a bit irritated. I've changed my LJ mail address to my backup meowmail address so I can keep track of people replying to things here. Perhaps it's time to see if [livejournal.com profile] hafoc can set up another mailbox with Charter (from what I've seen on their site there should be slots for nine more boxes).

This song would make an interesting AMV...

Loveless episode 12 - Endless

Talk about an appropriate title. I hope that the ending is an indication of another season or OVAs being forthcoming at some point.

So I'm watching Tsubasa Chronicle ([livejournal.com profile] toshirodragon is like my anime and manga crack dealer or something) and I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm also geeking out on a few levels, I'm picking up the meaning of yet more Japanese (yay!) and picking out some Japanese accents (or rather, realizing that when I'm having "WTF, that doesn't sound like anything like what the sub says" moments it's because it's a very different dialect). But the niftiest part is noticing some folklore themes. *geekyfangirlysquees!*

On the first world the kudan of the three main characters take the forms of a dragon, phoenix, and what I think is a kirin (it's not a form of it that I'm familiar with, but a fox/wolf thing with a horn seems to fit the bill). On the second world you find a hijutsu master (mistress) that uses a fan to amplify her power and her daugther uses a mirror. This is niggling at me as some folklore I'm probably missing out on. Inuyasha fans will recall that Naraku's first two incarnations, Kagura and Kanna, use a fan and a mirror as well.

I so need to find a good, comprehensive, book on Japanese folklore and superstition! Not getting the references yet knowing, or strongly suspecting, they are there in several anime that I watch is driving me freaking NUTS!

Sometimes the English broadcasts of anime annoy the hell out of me. And I'm not talking about poor casting or translations, or even "editing for content" (though I have rants for all of those topics). No, I'm talking about something that fansubbers usually do that apparently the "professionals" never think of doing, translating the written Japanese in scenes.

Now I'm not saying that everything in text in an anime needs to be changed to English, I rather enjoy matter-of-fact appearances of Japanese text (newspapers, books, posters, etc) but there are times when it is obvious that the viewer is supposed to pick something significant out of the text in a scene. I think zooming in on some text and displaying it for several seconds is a fairly good indicator that Something Important is there.

If a character writes down something that she conceals from another character but we get a nice clear shot that lasts long enough for us to read the text (if we can read Japanese) then it's probably significant to the story and it should be translated. Likewise, when a character is reading something and the camera zooms in and stops on the text it obviously means we should read it and therefore it should be translated. I might forgive missing some of the instances within an episode, but they don't even bother with the episode titles or location notes in some of the stuff they broadcast. I don't think there's anything more frustrating than knowing that there's something important to a story that you're missing because someone did a sloppy job in translation.

If they can turn cigarettes into stick pens (Yu Yu Hakusho) and lollipops (One Piece), and minimize or remove blood (Yu Yu Hakusho again) then they can certainly translate a few frames of text (Paranoia Agent, .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet).

If I were in the market for .hack or Paranoia Agent on DVD I would be very leery of buying them, based entirely on the broadcast version. I'd have to rent them just to see if they bothered to translate the text in the DVDs. The bitter and cynical part of me says they probably didn't bother. It's "just cartoons" so the text can't actually mean anything after all.

Thanks to Cartoon Network, Saturday is Anime Day. Since there are a few shows I don't care for in the line-up I generally come back to my PC and futz for a bit. This time I happened to have the latest episode of Loveless downloaded and unwatched.

So I watched it.

Engage spoiler evading fangirl mode.

Youji!! Stalker network! Kio/Sensei! Kio/Yayoi! Yuiko's tiny dress! Does everyone see the same shrink?! ARGH! Evil next episode preview!

A fansub is pretty bad if I can tell the translation is screwed. (Though the fact that I'm now actually understanding some words (other than names) in the original Japanese may dilute this statement.)

And if they also do weird translations of names.... Nothing quite like hearing Pazu and having the sub say Buzz. Or hearing Nagasaki and seeing Nagashima.

And "aa" is not "um", "yah" perhaps, or some other vague affirmative sound, but "um" doesn't quite cut it.

I'll hop in the bandwagon for this one. And expand it a bit.
  • I shall list 15 fandoms I'm involved with.
  • You shall guess my favorite character/person and my favorite pairing/One True Pairing.
  • I shall update the list by:
    • putting the fandom with correctly guessed characters in bold
    • putting the fandom with correctly guessed pairings in italics
See the list here. )

I'm not going to thumbnail this one. It's just too... weird? Embarrassing?

Though I am sort of happy with the basic anatomy....

Anyway, blame this post/thread in [livejournal.com profile] joisbishmyoga's LJ.
