When in doubt, geek!

Regular readers may remember that the last time I was at my folks I was internetless for the duration. Well I obviously fixed that this time since I was able to post here from the laptop (a windows one borrowed from
hafoc). Well today I escaped from WWIII (otherwise known as dad coming home) by tackling my brother's PC.
It was a WinME box. For some bizarre reason it ceased to be able to handle DNS lookups. After dicking around with it last time I came prepared on this trip, with Win2kPro. Of course the first issue was the complete inability of Win2k to find the built in modem (this is one of those beginner boxes that Gateway was selling a few years back). Somehow I managed not to swear, probably because I was expecting something to go wrong (though I thought it would be the USB ports, given my experience with older hardware and Win2k). Thankfully the "system restoration" disks that Gateway ships allow you to just install bits and pieces, one of which was the drivers for the modem. Now I just have to get the scanner working again and install Office....
I'm feeling better physically, the hormones are a bit less whacked out. I'm worn out and in need of either a lot of sleep or some iron rich food (or both).
Dial-up is really slow once you get used to cable....

Date: 2005-08-26 02:44 am (UTC)Dad's back to his usual ornery self. He was actually doing much better before I even managed to get here. They debrided the wound and put a vacuum dressing on it rather than amputate, which is a very good thing. There will be visiting nurses coming in once or twice a week for the wound vac and the IV antibiotics, mostly for insurance purposes since mom is trained for both (this is not the first time he's had either of them). Ironically I've been serving more as a nursemaid and chauffeur for my brother, shuttling him off to assorted appointments for his back (and now his knee). While I'm sure they could use another able driver here I think I have enough cousins in this town to cover the job rather than keeping me around.
When I get home I'll see how many chapters of Sakende I'm behind, and what else I was following that I'm behind on. Though from what I've seen in your LJ I might have to do pitiful eyes at other folks for stuff on YD that I missed. Though I suspect the good stuff will show up on
