Since I'm a New Englander with Canadian friends and relatives I guess this makes sense. (Though I don't know where I picked up prison slang....)

A nit-picking note: "Tonic" means "soda" only in some portions of New England. I don't use "tonic" to mean "soda" (or "pop" as [livejournal.com profile] hafoc insists) but my mom did when she was growing up (in Maine, in the 40s and 50s). If I choose "tonic means soda" my New England slang goes to 100%, even if most New Englanders (certainly most of my generation or younger) would have no clue that tonic was ever used as slang for soda.
