Knitting update

It's been about a month, so it's about time.
First, a hat I did to test some pattern modifications an to have a hat to "go with" my quilted flannel jacket that I wear in fall in spring. It's a modification of the "Reasonably Hip" hat pattern again.

I like the short rows that make the hat longer in back so it covers my ears better. This time I adjusted the gauge to work with a single strand of worsted.
Then I had some of that yarn left so I made this hat:

The construction on this one is what attracted me, it starts basically as a narrow garter stitch scarf. Once you have knit about half a scarf (32" in the original, 36" in the larger version) you're supposed to coil it around and seam it before picking up to knit the crown. Well I prefer to cut yarn as infrequently as possible so I coiled it around and picked up the stitches for the crown before seaming, which insured that I would have precisely enough stitches for the crown and would seam in the right place. I changed the stockinette crown to garter like the rest of the hat too while I was at it. Anyway, seaming after knitting the crown was simple, though annoying since you have to be sure it will stretch enough to make the hat wearable without being too loose. I like it but it's a bit snug and tends to creep on my very slippery hair so when I make another, eventually, I will knit a longer strip and pick up more stitches for the crown, maybe 40" and 80 stitches rather than 36" and 70. Heck, maybe 44" and 90 stitches.
Then I knit the hat that I was planning when I knit the previous brimmed hat:

Please excuse the blurry photo, it's more color accurate than the other one I have and it's not like there's any fine details to be seen. It's for my brother in "Arctic Cat colors", or as close as I can get from memory of the hat he liked best something like twenty years ago.
And finally an out of date photo for Mom's vest:

It's out of date because today I finished the armscye and sewed the shoulder seams. I've picked up stitches for the neck ribbing so after 2" of that I will have just the armholes to finish, the faux i-cord in front to sew down, and then the hard part... installing a zipper.
I also have a pair of gloves in progress. I have wrists, palms, and index fingers done on both gloves and just started the middle finger of one of them today. I knit the wrists and palms of both of them at once using the magic loop technique and a long circular needle with both ends of the skein of yarn. It wasn't as much of a tangle-fest as I feared it might become. I find it is quicker to knit the fingers one at a time on double pointed needles, largely because I can get into a rhythm and just keep knitting without having to shuffle the stitches around on the long circular.
Next update should be finished vest (possibly minus zipper) and gloves.

Date: 2009-12-21 04:54 pm (UTC)I went through about 30 episodes of Bleach, 20 of One Piece, the weekly episodes of the three series I follow on Hulu, the weekly NCIS episode, and 13 episodes of Ookiku Furikabutte. (Holy crap! That's a lot of anime.) The anime episodes are about 22-24 minutes each so I guess I know how many hours I've knit in the last month.
I'm ridiculously pleased with the vest, I just hope I can get the zipper in properly and neatly. And that it fits Mom, I'm sure it in terms of girth, but she's shorter than I am so I'm not sure I've got the length right. I hope I erred on the side of too long.
I've been whining at Kris about wanting to knit on something new (and for Namid) a lot though.
