So ages and ages ago I asked people to give me questions for some of my original characters who would be assigned random numbers from one to fifteen. I didn't get many questions, and characters numbered five, eight, ten, fourteen, and fifteen didn't get any, but the ones I got were doozies. Feel free to ask more in the comments, though you can figure out who ten of the random numbers are there are still those five unknowns to mix and match with.
Clare asked: If number nine and number twelve were Jello wrestling, who would win? And would number one watch?
So Aeryn and Elyza are jello wrestling. This is amusing because the random assignment of numbers put co-workers, partners in fact, in the jello pit together. Who would win? It would be pretty evenly matched but after a prolonged bout I think Elyza would come out on top. Aeryn is smaller, but she is a very scrappy fighter with some experience at survival on the streets. Elyza, however, has military close combat training and experience with urban guerrilla warfare.
Does Myra watch? Again, the random assignment ended up grabbing a co-worker, this time the person in charge of supplies. Myra would definitely watch. Seeing Elyza doing something as silly as jello wrestling? She's probably selling tickets! (Don't worry, Elyza and Aeryn would get their cuts of the profits.)
Susan asked: What is Seven's greatest fear? Assuming it's zombies, like any right-thinking person, does Seven have a plan? What's in your closet, number Seven?
What is Sarah's greatest fear? Well it's not zombies, though if she gave some thought to what the alchemists and occultists in the undercity might be up to she would probably reconsider. No, Sarah's greatest fear is being forced into marriage and motherhood and general "proper housewifery". Luckily for her, her cousin has some experience in living that sort of situation and is willing to be as unladylike as necessary to keep Sarah from the same fate.
Does she have an zombie plan? Well no, but I'm sure once she thought of the problem she'd have a plan involving plenty of firearms and even more ammunition as well as explosives and every ward and bane she could concoct with access to the undercity and Ian's laboratory.
What's in her closet? In both the literal and figurative sense, her alchemical and occult related studies. Figuratively in that she has been hiding it from her mother, and indeed, all immediate family members other than her father. Literally due to her keeping her journal of experiments and theories in the false bottom of her "hope chest" that she has been filling to pacify her mother's urges to get her married off.
Is One really the loneliest number? Why?
Is Myra the loneliest? Why? Myra is lonely, but not obviously so. No one working for The Company is particularly encourage to talk about what they work on, which distances them from people outside the company when the topic of employment comes up. Myra is also working there as part of an undercover assignment, which is another level of distance within the company. There's no one she can tell everything to, in or out of the workplace.
And Two? As bad as One?
And Abraham? As bad as Myra? If Abraham is lonely it's his own damned fault. He's deliberately cut or stretched most of his ties with his clan, which would be more detrimental to his lifestyle if he weren't so useful to them. He doesn't particularly get along with his adopted daughter's lover and therefore doesn't see her as much as he would like, though she does stop by to visit regularly. So all in all, he's probably not as lonely as Myra, but he also has less reason to be lonely than she does.
Is Six really what everyone sees on the surface, or is Six hiding something?
Is Ersilia what she appears to be, or is she hiding something? Well that all depends entirely on if the people seeing her are part of her subculture or not, generally speaking Werepeople don't go advertising the fact they get kinda furry on the full moon. That obvious bit aside, Ersilia doesn't have anything about herself worth keeping hidden, or didn't until the night her husband and child died.
Hafoc asked: Why is Thirteen prone to bouts of sarcasm and bitterness when Three is near?
Why is Apollonia prone to... when Marcus is near. Hoo boy. The random number assignment really made this one hard. Not only are these two from the same story universe, they're live-in lovers! That's not to say that Apollonia doesn't ever have bouts of sarcasm or bitterness around Marcus, but they're infrequent and mostly focused around her reluctance to acknowledge her own magical power and potential and Marcus' pushes to get her to train herself to use them. Though sometimes she's just annoyed at his penchant for dressing her in stiletto heels when she's already a full head taller than him and the vast majority of the population.
Four and Six claim to know, but their reasons don't agree. Which one is right? Or are both right, from different points of view?
Mei and Ersilia claim to know. Mei, being quite young and traditionally minded, is sure it has to do with the height difference and those ridiculous shoes. Ersilia, being both older and more familiar with the people in question, is equally sure it has to do with the way Marcus and Abraham can't seem to be honestly civil with each other. Both have valid ideas but they're only peripherally correct.
Is one of them lying or at least trying to mislead? Why?
Mei isn't so much lying and not putting her gut reaction into words. She looks at Marcus and Apollonia and sees a couple very like her guardian and the one woman he's ever truly loved. Master Ian and his love never got together but Mei is sure that if they had there would be the same sort of tension in the relationship, even if she's not sure the same reason for the tension is there.
Ersilia is probably misdirecting instinctively, you just don't talk about things like how much magical power someone has. Even if it does set all your fur on end. It's just rude.
Could it be to protect 9 from 11?
Could it be to protect Aeryn from Ian? Of the two, Mei would be the one to have a reason to involve herself with Aeryn and Ian, though only for the latter. Ian picked her up out of poverty and a truly dire future and Mei is very concerned that she might end up back in that sort of situation again. Therefore she's very careful to keep an eye on what Ian does, particularly with strange women.
If you are reading this on LJ or DW you will notice the NaNoWriMo progress widget in the sidebar. I'm going to give it a go again this year but I'm not as excited as I have been in previous years. I have a character with the barest sketch of a setting and a patchy, hazy background and we'll see where he takes me I guess.
