When in doubt, geek!
Aug. 25th, 2005 07:32 pmRegular readers may remember that the last time I was at my folks I was internetless for the duration. Well I obviously fixed that this time since I was able to post here from the laptop (a windows one borrowed from
hafoc). Well today I escaped from WWIII (otherwise known as dad coming home) by tackling my brother's PC.
It was a WinME box. For some bizarre reason it ceased to be able to handle DNS lookups. After dicking around with it last time I came prepared on this trip, with Win2kPro. Of course the first issue was the complete inability of Win2k to find the built in modem (this is one of those beginner boxes that Gateway was selling a few years back). Somehow I managed not to swear, probably because I was expecting something to go wrong (though I thought it would be the USB ports, given my experience with older hardware and Win2k). Thankfully the "system restoration" disks that Gateway ships allow you to just install bits and pieces, one of which was the drivers for the modem. Now I just have to get the scanner working again and install Office....
I'm feeling better physically, the hormones are a bit less whacked out. I'm worn out and in need of either a lot of sleep or some iron rich food (or both).
Dial-up is really slow once you get used to cable....
