It's that time....
Feb. 2nd, 2009 06:47 pmKnitting update! *watches most of her flist run away*
I document everything but swatches and failed experiments over on Ravelry so I forget to update here and Craftster (and I have about a year of stuff to update there, *sigh*). So it's time to catch up.
Apparently I posted the sideways hats I made for gifts but not the cabled ones? *checks* Oh, I did two out of three on the cabled hats, so let's start with that.

For Dad. Everyone got two hats this Christmas, one of these in various yarns, and one of the sideways hats. Except Dad, who got the following for his second hat:

While the brim is substantial it's not that huge, it's a perspective thing from taking a photo at arm's length. This pattern was a real pain and it should not have been. It's very simple but the gauge in the pattern only makes sense if you are an insanely loose knitter and I, most definitely, am not. I ended up starting over four times and using 10.5 needles rather than the called for 7s (and doubling the yarn so it wouldn't look like swiss cheese). I winged the brim and am not overly fond of it, but it works and it has been gifted and everyone in the house over there likes it so it's good.
I made slippers for
hafoc (@ LJ for those reading elsewhere) and I don't have a finished photo (I should take a shot of his feet sometime) but here's half of the first one:

I made a hat for his mom too, my pattern from the summer worked up in an acrylic yarn for colder weather wear. Note I made it for a size smaller than I wear myself.

And I reverse engineered ("unvented" in knitter's slang) a cable from a photo and made a hat from it.

Maybe I'll make a pattern for that one.
And finally finished the scarflet/neckwarmer to go with my Foliage hat.

The buttons were ones I found when I went looking for buttons to back the ones I bought. I could have saved $1.67 if I checked my sewing bin first. *sigh*
And finally, a second take on the "Reasonably Hip" hat pattern. I cast-on more stitches so I could do double decreases that would maintain the stitch pattern but I still ended up liking the way they looked on the inside better and turned the hat inside out like I did the first one. I also totally abandoned the plastic canvas stiffened brim idea and worked out something completely different.

The brim is a bit wide and a hair deep but I love it!

Date: 2009-02-03 03:12 am (UTC)nice job :-)
i'm currently obsessing over knitting underwear. using up scraps of sock yarn and sport weight. nothing i'm completely happy with yet, but getting there. and suprisingly, wool underwear is really comfortable, and the sock yarn ones, at least, probably not to warm for summer.
yes, i know i'm a weirdo. but you knew that too, lol

Date: 2009-02-03 09:14 pm (UTC)I just went on a binge of "OMG, I have to finish some of this stuff!!" so the first version of my self designed sock pattern is done, and I want to do it again with a different toe (more rounded) and probably a "widdershins" heel (toe up with heel flap). Socks are harder than I'd expect, not for the knitting of them but for the fitting. I guess I like my socks snugger than most or something.
I should refrain from starting anything new and get on with the sweater and shawl though. Even if I do want to try knitting an entrelac hat with the rest of the skeins from that cabled hat and the brimmed one for Hafoc's mom.
