Finally finished that scarf
Jul. 30th, 2007 01:29 pmActually, I had done everything but bind off while at Anthrocon but it got set aside for a bit. A good thing it had because not long after I got back someone asked about the picot bind off on Knitty's Fetching over on
knitting. Being me, I went and looked up how the bind off worked and took note that it was good for projects that need a stretchy bind off....
So, the things I have learned with this feather and fan moebius scarf:
1. I can make a long tail cast on look like a garter stitch ridge. This is nifty but the cast on is not as stretchy as I would like. I recently found another set of directions about knitting in the moebius shape that uses a provisional cast on, I'll try that next.
2. Even simple lace can be a bitch, particularly if you can't stretch out your work to take a good look at it. Next time, stitch markers every pattern repeat.
3. Next time, use an odd number of pattern repeats. When feather and fan is mirrored over the cast on in this scarf it makes it oddly ripply and lumpy. I might be able to block some of it out but it would have been better to have one more pattern repeat to make the feathers and fans oppose each other across the scarf.
4. The Russian join is hard to improvise with a sewing needle and thread leader. I really need to remember to pack my yarn needles when I travel. I forgot them again on this trip but Mom used to knit so I had access to her stuff. I have acquired a nice case for future knitting projects to live in.
5. The picot bind off is really handy for weaving in your tail. If I hadn't forgotten the last picot I'd challenge you to find where I wove the end tail.
6. The all garter feather and fan is great for weaving tails. In fact I figured a way to minimize the jog at the start of round while weaving in the starting tail.
7. The Russian Join might not be the best approach for this sort of lace. It landed in the yarn overs for me. *sigh* It's hard to spot thought so I can live with it, it just would have worked better if it landed in in the knit two togethers.
Things that went wrong and didn't get corrected, rendering this scarf A Learning Experience:
1. One stitch short in the first pattern row. I think I "lost" the last stitch in the funky moebius cast on.
2. One stitch extra in the second to last pattern row. I'm not sure where this happened, I may have knitted two stitches rather than knitting them together in the previous row. I can't find the problem in a casual look over (if I tried counting stitches I might find it).
3. One picot short in the bind off. I didn't have the directions handy and I just wanted the thing to be done. I should have done one more picot by casting on and binding off two more stitches. It's not terribly obvious so I didn't try to squeeze a picot out of the tail.
I'll post some pictures when I get home. Maybe I'll have figured out how to block this thing before then.
