Actually, there's been no progress on the actual shawl, instead I have been charting and swatching my ideas.

Here is my first workable idea, I've swatched it out on 7mm needles using about half a skein of Red Heart Super saver I had hanging around (the "pumpkin" color is a great "safety orange" BTW).

The center corner portion (the shawl is a triangular one), the middle body repeat, and the front/top edge. Click on the images for larger versions if you want.

There are things I'm going to try to change but the hardest part worked out well enough, getting the idea down in a knittable form.

Firstly, I like the look of the edge section.

The areas in the blue boxes are actually at the edges/between motifs. I put them in to maintain the stitch count from the previous section of the shawl. However, there are a lot more eyelets in this lace pattern and the swatch actually stretches out more than it needs to. I could leave it and block the shawl into more of a crescent at the outer edge but since I don't really like the look of the area between the motifs I think I'm going to take it out so it will more like the neck area of the shawl:

Lovely Lace Shawl - Pattern I complete

Moving on to the established repeat in the body of the shawl:

Again, the blue boxes are that awkward space between motifs that I'll remove. The hot pink boxes are an element I added to maintain the stitch count. I don't like how it fattens up the "stem" of the "blossom" so I'm taking it out (and after I went through all the trouble of borrowing stitches from the leaves on either side to make it!). The yellow boxes just show where I would want to link the core of the stem to the outside of the flower in the absence of the bit I want to take out.

Finally, the corner:

Blue boxes are the same awkward bit of netting that is going to be taken out. The hot pink box is the spine stitch. I could leave it as is, since it's been there from the start of the leaf motif in the body of the shawl but I could, possibly, work it up into the same sort of "stem" seen in the body. On the other hand, it wouldn't "grow" out the same area of the leaf branches so maybe it would be better to leave it be. The yellow box is where I started building out for the blossom-y bits so there is a pair of stitches on either side of the spine stitch there. I think it looks a bit wide so I'll remove the spine stitch at the bottom of that boxed area rather than at the top as I have in this swatch.

All in all I like what I have so far, I just need to tweak it. once I get to the tip of the long blossom petal I have to start the chevron border to the final leaf edging I want to use. Taking out the bits in the blue boxes might actually let me use that part of the original chart without alteration since That should get me back to the stitch count at the end of section two where the first blossom element appeared. If I can't just reuse the old chart, well I've proven I can just make a new one without too much hair pulling. :D

On the writing front, I still need Character Fifteen for that meme. I have not forgotten it.

I did have a character "drop in" on the drive to Anthrocon last week.

What I know:

  • His name is Daniel Samson Greer. I don't know if that's given middle surname or given hyphenated-surname.

  • He is tall and lanky. I don't know if he's light as a feather and fragile or deceptively heavy due to wiry muscles.

  • He's adult. Based on his appearance people would probably say he's over 25 but probably under 40.

  • He has dreadlocks. They are not his natural hair and are brightly colored. There may be tubing or other non-hairlike textured involved. He changes his hair a lot.

  • He wears glasses. He might not need them.

  • He probably has piercings and tattoos. He wouldn't go for large gauge jewelry, stretching for flesh tunnels or plugs would not appeal to him. Likewise, there's a low chance of facial tattoos or full sleeves, but a back piece might exist.

What I don't know:

  • What sort of world he lives in. Other than one that would allow him to have things like his synthetic dreads and glasses. Cyberpunk? Urban Fantasy? Generic now/near future?

  • What he does. I'd like something counter to the stereotype presented by his appearance., but the Rule of Cool could override that.

  • What he wears. With the dreadlocks there is a tendency to see him in Boots, with jeans or pants with a ton of buckles and D-rings and such. I'd like to break that up a bit.

  • What his orientation is. This normally isn't something I plan out, the characters just start talking, or drooling. Generally though they do let me know if I get is wrong.

  • What his relationship status is. Rather linked to the above, and again, they generally correct me if I'm wrong.

I had an interesting dream the last night of the con. It was a bit of a muddled mess, as dreams generally are, but there were some ideas in it that I have been rolling around. It was urban fantasy, mixing up magic and hacking, and there were some ideas regarding magic and consent that I'll be mulling over. My POV character in the dream was not Daniel, but maybe this might be his world. That does make me wonder just who my POV female magic user was, I don't know anything about her other than her willingness to top from the bottom in certain, spellcasting obligated, situations.
