So I'm working on my second moebius scarf now. This one is a garter stitch variation of feather and fan, something I figured would be simple and more interesting to knit without requiring a chart or serious note taking.

Yeah.

When I started my first pattern row of decreases and increases I discovered I was one stitch short. This didn't bother me much, though it was somewhat puzzling (and since I had already cast on twice at this point, I figured I had just missed picking up one stitch in the cast on) so I tossed in a plain stitch where the last decrease should have been.

Everything was going swimmingly after that... until row 16.

Row/round 16, as you might have guessed, was another pattern row (as every 4th is with feather and fan) and some where along the way from the row 12 I had picked up another stitch. Now, it would be logical to assume I just missed a decrease somewhere in row 16, but the thing is I count every set of increases/decreases as I knit, and then count the set again before continuing. I could still have missed one, but it's unlikely. So I did the last 3 stitches as a double decrease and proceeded to count every stitch as I knitted the next row.

No missing stitches now.

So this scarf shall not be perfect, we'll see how noticeable the goofs are when I finish it. I'm currently about midway through round 18 and the original moebius is a 24 round scarf. That is a pattern row so I need to decide if I bind off instead or continue for another couple rows and bind off just before the next pattern row.

Either way I'll be joining the next skein soon. Given the spots of fuzziness I ended up knitting into the last two rounds I should have broken off and started it sooner but after the two stitch issues I just can't see frogging back three rows to knit in better yarn. This is just a test of the stitch pattern anyway.

If I make another one with this stitch I'm going to load the puppy up with stitch markers for every pattern repeat, just so I can spot problems faster.

I really need interesting stitch patterns that are reversible and non-rolling and not god damned garter stitch. I've never been fond of the look of garter stitch but with the way the moebius scarf is made you really need something that looks the same/similar/not ugly on the wrong side. To add to the problem there is a distinct line running in the middle of the scarf from the cast on. I've figured out how to make it so it looks like a garter stitch ridge now, which is better than my first attempt, but it will cut any pattern in half visually (and stripe anything stockinette based so one side shows the knit and the other side the purl). The thought of seed stitching a whole scarf makes my brain shut down too, boring and slow.

Time for a knitting tag I think....
