I mentioned this site a few posts ago when I was looking for a free circular cardigan pattern but now that I've had a chance to look through it throughly I have to say that every knitter needs to poke through there.
DROPS Design (Garn Studio) has hundreds of free knitting (and crochet) patterns. They're translating Norwegian patterns from their pattern books (dating from autumn 1985 to present) into other languages. There are currently 1861 patterns available in English (some use UK terminology, others use US/Canadian).
Like most companies, the sizes tend to top out at XXL (in the women's patterns anyway) but I have found one XXXL pattern while poking around. Anyone over a size XXL that knits is probably familiar with increasing patterns so it's not that much of a hardship, and the patterns are free which beats paying for something you end up almost entirely rewriting. :)
Here are some of the patterns I've saved so far:
Man, I want to knit stuff now.
