I started having problems with both hands when I was working as a programmer, but the left one has had problems since I was a teen. I had a really bad habit of loading up my backpack/book bag so it was at least 30 pounds and then swinging it up to my left shoulder with my left hand. The strap would put all the weight on my thumb just before it went to my shoulder so the thumb would be hyperflexed for a moment. Yeah, stupid things we do as kids. *sigh*
I think the knitting is tapping into that problem since my current projects are either on small needles (3.5 and 3mm) so that I'm basically pinching something for extended periods or they are heavy. I'm sure knitting 3500+ stitches (on 3mm needles) in a day didn't help.
Arthritis runs in the family but I thought I'd have another twenty years at least. :P
