Knitting Update
Yes, it's that time again, catching up on the knitting projects.
So after checking what I last posted about here's what I've been up to:
Getting a photo of the vest I made for Mom last Christmas with the zipper sewn in.

Mom won't model so imagine I'm a good five inches shorter than that the hem hits at mid hip rather than at the high hip. It took me four hours to hand sew in that zipper. *ugh* And as much as I hated sewing it in I love the way it came out. Zippered sweaters tempt me but I don't know if I want to take on sewing another zipper in by hand. Perhaps I should invest in a walking foot for my machine.
Knitting tiny socks.

I knit the first one before I left to visit family this summer, and finished the second while I was there. Knitting one of those in public is a conversation starter, people are amazed by the tiny 0000 needles and yarn not much thicker than a few strands of thread.
Then I needed "knit or go crazy" project for the rest of my visit.

It needs blocking but I haven't figured out how yet. Generally you block tams over dinner plates but this one is too large for all the plates in the house. Once I manage to block it I will get a shot of the lace pattern on the top.
Then I was home and wanted a quick project that didn't require much thinking.

That hat in Sailor's Rib again. I will probably give this to my brother since it's effectively "safety orange".
This next one looks horrid in progress.

It's all ribbing so it needs to be stretched over a body to look good. I still need to finish the neck and sleeves and seam it up but Namid will be modeling it eventually.
Then I had a few weeks of being too sick to feel like knitting.
When I felt better I decided to crochet something.

Yes, it's that Japanese hat pattern again. I had most of the cone of yarn from the tam left over so a cotton cloche seemed like a good idea. So far I've worn it more like a bowler but being able to roll that brim down when the sun is too bright is very handy.
And this last one isn't cut because I am damned proud of it.

The observant with good memories will note that's the same pattern as the neck of my red shawl. I made some alterations to the second section (the mesh, diamonds, and chevrons) and then pretty much did the edging that I plan to finish my red shawl with.
Other than those projects all I did was start the ribbing on the over knee socks.

I am actually working on a doll sweater, but it's not turning out well. Probably because I have no pattern, am making it up as I go, and am knitting as much as possible in the round, but I think it'll turn out OK in a funky way maybe. Once I find out where that extra yarn in the arm came from and how to get rid of it. I'm REALLY wanting to make one of those punky openwork doll sweaters with holes, but have no real idea how. I started this one with thin yarn and biggish needles but it's working up like a regular sweater. You'd think it'd be easier to knit something up with deliberate mistakes and holes!

I love that crochet hat pattern, it's from a Japanese magazine called "European Handknitting" the Spring/Summer 2009 issue. I think the way the colors pooled make it especially eye-catching.
There's patterns out there for "distressed" sweaters, there's one in Rowan #43. The runs are easy, you yarn over and then some rows later drop the stitch that started from the yarn over. I'd imagine that making a double yarn over and then only knitting into it once would make a generous hole as the extra yarn would work into the neighboring stitches and loosen them up.

that last hat looks so awesome, and /epicdrool over that bjd shawl. was that with thread, or like, superfine crochet cotton?

The shawl is #10 crochet cotton and size 1 (2.25mm) needles. The color caught my eye in the store and I kept looking at it every time I walked by for months until I decided to just buy it and figure out what to do with it later.
